Baby Steps Are For The Birds

Time for a much needed update, I suppose.

I’ll start off by letting you all know: S is officially promotable to the rank of Captain!!!

This is a huge relief after the hiccup that was South Carolina a couple of months ago. We had no reason to worry at all about his status (he’s just as fabulous on paper as he is in person, and as partial as I am, his OERs definitely back that statement up ::wink wink::) until that little experience, and I’ll admit, I was a pretty obnoxiously worried mess about the whole thing. I hate to admit it, but I was preparing for the Army to say “see ye!” and was even writing my woe-is-me blog post in my head.

Thankfully, it didn’t come to that. As I mentioned last week, the people who were in a need-to-know position got the list a week ago this morning. It seems the reasoning behind this is to give commanders plenty of time to counsel those who won’t promote before they read the list and get the “surprise” of their life. A friend was able to calm me down considerably on Tuesday by letting me know that if S hadn’t been counselled yet and he had good OERs, he was on the list. Now that we have official word, I think I can sleep (we’ll see if little miss #2 is on board with that plan).

So, that was step one. Step 2 is getting out of here, also previously mentioned last week. S has put in the required forms to request a CLC3 (Combined Logistics Captain’s Career Course), and has re-inquired about a JOBA (Junior Officer Broadening Assignment) position. His commanders would prefer to see him go the JOBA route–it’s an opportunity that won’t be available to him once he goes to CLC3–but understand that we are ready to move on. We are hoping to get some info about the JOBA possibilities soon, and if there is anything available (or anything that will be available if Congress doesn’t continue to fail at passing a budget), they will put in that packet first and the CLC3 packet second.

Again, it’s classic Army hurry-up-and-wait. I’m just hoping we have an idea about what will be going on here, soon.

Updates have been scarce at best not only because there was nothing to update, but because E and I spent the last 3 weeks in Georgia. It was an awesome trip and was gone far too quickly. We made some new friends, I got my drivers’ license renewed (more on that continuing nightmare later), enjoyed the zoo, botanical gardens, some thunderstorms, and the south in general. Not to mention, we got to spend some much-needed time with the family. I taught myself (more or less with my mom’s help) how to knit, and I entered the third (and final!) trimester. I also did some work, and if I ever finish the chapter, I might get paid! Woo hoo! E became a spoiled mess thanks to my parents and brother, but she also came home a total Daddy’s Girl, so I guess something good came out of it, at least from S’s perspective.

I feel like I have a lot more to write about, but I am still operating on east-coast-time, and can’t form coherent thoughts, anymore. Now that the stress has dissipated, I am going to go slumber. Maybe there will be an update tomorrow. I don’t know. I don’t know if I’ll have time.
