It has officially, officially begun. The movers have been scheduled. The plane tickets have been booked. The decisions about what will be making the move and what will not are being made. It’s happening. It’s really happening. I’m somewhere in the zone of elated and gassy (a gluten-free cookie to whomever gets the reference).
There is a handful of us from S’s unit who are making the trek to Fort Lee, VA this spring-summer. The first family left this weekend to make their way across the continent. I’m sad and jealous to see them go, even though we will be following in almost exactly a month! My mom will be flying out in 3 weeks (give or take some days) and then flying back to Atlanta with the girls and me. We will be filling up the back row of an airplane for 4-ish hour at the ass-crack of dawn. I’m already stressed.
And, if you are one to keep count, we have already shaved off a few weeks from our original estimated date of departure. But that’s not the only plan to change.
Here’s a list so far:
- I will not be taking the cat on the plane. Instead, he will be going with S and the dogs.
- S will not be driving the Prius. Instead, we’re going to load up the van and do a partial-DITY move.
- We will not be letting the Army do all of the moving, instead, we are now doing a partial-DITY (deja-vu from number 2?)
- My brother won’t be making the trip with him. Instead, I think one of the guys from the unit might be driving with him, instead. He is from the same part of GA I am (he went to a high school a couple of miles away from mine), so it’s like a free trip home for him
We’ve never done a partial DITY, so that ought to be interesting. Any advice is appreciated.
Now, we have 3ish weeks to figure out a whole host of issues. We need to set up a cleaning service, a carpet cleaner, someone to come fix up the yard (we are not yard people), and a car shipping service. S is already marking items to be taken to the dump (E’s mattress and box spring are not making the move with us. We are giving away her bed to some friends and she is getting our guest room bed in VA. We are getting a new mattress and ours will go to the guest room) and I will be starting the official “things that must go in the luggage” list in the next few days. So far, that list unofficially includes all of E’s buddies (stuffed animals) and her copies of Tangled and Frozen (when it is released).
I’m feeling overwhelmed just thinking about it.
