Homemade Pretzels

We took the girls to see Frozen for the fourth time yesterday.

And before you say “how can you afford that?!” let me explain a little about the on-post movie theaters. There is one theatre. They play one movie on Thursday and Friday nights and on the weekends there will be two: a family movie and an adult movie (most of the time). What is shown is never the newest, and so there is no going to see the big movies on their opening nights. Because of all of the above, the movies are at a discount: $3.50 for an adult and $1.50 for ages 3-12.

The last 3 times we saw it cost us the same as it did to see it in a regular theatre back in December.

Anyway, about 30 minutes into the movie (and the kids–and me–hogging all of the popcorn, S decided he wanted a pretzel. But he came back with nachos because, apparently, they ran out of pretzels. After the movie, we went to the commissary to get dog and cat food, and I noticed they had soft pretzels next to the rotisserie chickens. I thought to myself “I could do that,” and last night, I hunted Pinterest for a recipe. I figured if S couldn’t have his pretzel with Frozen, he could have it with football (he’s from Denver and grew up outside of Seattle. He’s an anxious football-fan mess, today).

This one wins the “most beautiful” superlative. It also illustrates that I need to learn how to apply the egg wash a little better.

Most of them, however, looked like the above. Not so beautiful and just as illustrative of my need to improve my egging ability.

But they sure did taste good!

They are a little on the bready side (and as you can see, I used Kosher salt as I lacked pretzel salt), but had a good flavor. I am considering making them, again, but instead of twisting them into a semi-pretzel shape, just making them into rolls. They would be very good as sandwich rolls or on the side of a roasted chicken and green bean dinner. I might try to find another recipe for the pretzels themselves, but I will keep this one around for future endeavors, regardless. Besides, there is nothing better than freshly baked bread, warm from the oven.

If you’d like to try your hand at these pretzels, you can find the recipe here on comfortablefood.com.
